Welcome to the second series of lessons with Justin Bieber’s recording and mix engineer, Josh Goodwin! This time, we’ll be focusing on the huge 2015 hit “Love Yourself.” Despite a very small track count and problematic guitar recording, the record became a worldwide sensation thanks to its effective songwriting, flawless vocals, and Goodwin’s completely ITB mix. 

Opening the multi-track session, Josh provides the backstory to the track and then takes you through every aspect of the session. You’ll learn how he eliminated the hum from the guitar amp, tuned, EQ’d, compressed, and de-sibilized Justin’s vocals, added lush reverb to the trumpet recording, and implemented numerous effects. 

Showcasing the graphical interfaces of analog-modeled plugins, he also demonstrates a typical signal chain and parameter settings he uses when recording Justin’s vocals, commenting on his microphone selection. He also walks you through his mix-bass chain step-by-step.
